Guide to R290 Heat Pump Transportation&Storage

Guide to R290 Refrigerant Heat Pump Transportation and Storage for THTF Partners
<This information letter is to THTF wholesale and OEM/ODM partners only. You are not affected by it during your own legal handling, storage, and transportation; THTF tries to provide complete information but not guaranteed >
R290 is climate-friendly gas, and the heat pump with it filled, will not only assist the users or companies to meet is emissions yearly targets, but also has been very important in Europe’s decarbonization/NET ZERO.
1、General Information
The properties of R290
As mandated by the European Union and environmental regulations, R290 is increasingly being used to replace fluorinated hydrocarbons.
Please contact your THTF sales service representative when you have questions about gas detectors and service tools recommended by THTF.

Fire Safety
Explosion protecting
Make sure to evaluate the risk of an explosion in the warehouse before depositing heat pumps, especially if there is a large number. It can be evaluated through the heat pump and refrigerant quantities, the storage space’s capacity, and other equipment used.
– For example:
- Remove potential causes of ignition from the area.
- A minimum of two air changes should be done per hour in forced ventilation.
- Equip a gas warning system, particularly for R290.
- Impose specific actions once the alarm goes off.
- In areas where there is a risk of fire or explosion, post warning signs.
- Have a certain number and type of fire extinguishers on hand.
- Conduct training for employees who frequently work in high-risk areas for fire and explosion.
- Assign a fire safety officer.
- Provide an explosion protection document with zones labeled accordingly.
- Provide protective gear for warehouses to lessen potential damages caused by transport vehicles.
3、What has to be taken care of during Transport?
Transport ways
- The heat pump must be transported in its original packaging at all times.
- When transporting the heat pump, the air supply must be sufficient.
- Clear out all potential fire-causing objects.
- It is recommended that heat pumps be transported above ground level with natural ventilation.

Transport Damage
It is suggested to have mobile gas detectors, especially when transporting a large number of heat pumps. Mobile gas detectors are useful in the event of an accident to ensure that the R290 refrigerant has not been escaping from its container.
In the following cases, the R290 refrigerant must be escaped at the correct way before transporting the heat pumps:
- There is no original packaging of the heat pump
- Observed damage to the equipment such as leakage
4、Transportation of the THTF R290 PureHeat Heat Pump will be subject to ADR Regulations. Which starts on 1 January 2023.
Labeling requirement
- A 100 x 100 mm hazard label 2.1 is attached to the package.
- Directional arrows on opposite sides for the proper positioning and orientation of the packaging
Must be documented as of 1 January 2023 pursuant to the ADR
- Sender’s name and address
- recipient’s name and address
- Number of packages sent
- Exception of a transport vehicle in line with 1.1.3.6 of the ADR
- total number of R290 in kilograms in all packages, abbreviated with BK4.
Responsibilities in dangerous goods transport according to ADR as of 1 January 2023
Regardless of whether such equipment is transported through land, air, or water, it is still an important factor in the entirety of the transportation journey. The preparation of documents, the packaging of goods, loading and unloading, and possible conflicts that may be encountered during transportation
